Math Chapter 2- Addition in any order

Spelling Review- Unit 4

Weekly Note

8-30-10

Hello 1st grade families,

This week we have started learning about the vowels. We are really focusing on the short a sound. The kids have their first spelling review tomorrow and have been doing a great job on them in class. We also have started talking about living and non living things. We will start learning about what living things need and how they grow and change. In religion we have learned about what the church looks like and all of the names of the things that sit up on the altar. In math we are learning about order. We have learned about how addition problems can be written in any order. We are also learning about how the problems can be written up and down instead of side to side.

Next week we will start working on subtraction. We will start learning a few different strategies that will help them out. We will also start our big unit on Bears. The first big unit in science deals with animals, life cycles, and characteristics. To illustrate this in a fun way the first grade will learn all about bears. We will culminate our first big unit and all that we have learned with a Bear Picnic. We will have bear games, bear treats and share our favorite teddy bears! The picnic will be on September 17th at 12:30 at the baseball fields at the bottom of the hill behind the recess lot. I will be giving you more details as the day gets closer. We will be in need of some drinks, snacks, blankets, and extra hands!

Just a reminder that we will not have school on the 6th in celebration of Labor Day. Enjoy the long weekend- and don’t be surprised if your little ones are just a little less than excited to come back after the extra day!

Have a great weekend,

Miss Morse

Spelling Words

an, bad, can, had, cat, ran

Here is a great website that goes along with our spelling program. This week we are on Unit 4. There are all sorts of games that go along with this weeks words. We will be playing some of them on Thursday in computer lab, but any extra practice will help! Let me know by email if the link does not work- Thanks.
